Julie Tamiko Manning<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kiyoko Tanaka-Goto est n\u00e9e \u00e0 Tokyo en 1896. Son p\u00e8re quitte le Japon pour se rendre \u00e0 San Francisco \u00e0 la recherche d\u2019une vie meilleure, laissant derri\u00e8re lui la petite Kiyoko, alors \u00e2g\u00e9e de quatre ans, et sa m\u00e8re les mains vides. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un syst\u00e8me de s\u00e9lection de conjoints par \u00e9change de photos, Kiyoko arrive au Canada en 1916 dans le but de trouver son p\u00e8re et le ramener au Japon. Une fois au Canada, elle et son nouvel \u00e9poux se trouvent des emplois pendant quatre ans sur l\u2019\u00eele de Vancouver comme nettoyeurs de poulaillers et comme blanchisseurs. Ils d\u00e9m\u00e9nagent par la suite \u00e0 Vancouver o\u00f9, en compagnie de trois autres femmes, Kiyoko s\u2019ach\u00e8te un restaurant en utilisant les \u00e9conomies amass\u00e9es sur l\u2019\u00eele. Dans les ann\u00e9es vingt, elle acquiert un h\u00f4tel (aujourd\u2019hui devenu le bar Funky Winkerbeans dans le quartier du Downtown Eastside de Vancouver) et le transforme en bordel. Elle engage douze prostitu\u00e9es \u2013 des femmes d\u2019origine fran\u00e7aise, allemande, japonaise, chinoise, africaine et italienne. Comme tenanci\u00e8re, elle est intelligente et \u00e9quitable. Elle prend soin de ses filles et les paie bien. Elle connait aussi des policiers qui consentent \u00e0 ne pas la mettre en prison. En 1941, l\u2019ordre est donn\u00e9 d\u2019interner tous les japonais r\u00e9sidant sur la c\u00f4te ouest. Kiyoko perd tout et se cache. Or, on finit par la trouver. On l\u2019incarc\u00e8re, et par la suite elle est intern\u00e9e \u00e0 Greenwood, C.-B.. Pendant son internement, elle continue de fournir \u00e0 ses clients un endroit o\u00f9 jouer leur argent, ainsi que du vin de pissenlit (ill\u00e9gal) fait \u00e0 partir de fleurs cueillies par des enfants en \u00e9change de paiement. En 1945, apr\u00e8s la guerre, et malgr\u00e9 le fait qu\u2019on interdisait aux Japonais de revenir sur la c\u00f4te ouest, elle r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 convaincre une amie chinoise d\u2019\u00eatre son garant. \u00c0 son retour, elle ach\u00e8te et g\u00e8re quelques salons de paris dans le quartier chinois de Vancouver. Elle n\u2019a jamais r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 retourner au Japon, bien qu\u2019elle voul\u00fbt y retourner apr\u00e8s une p\u00e9riode de quatre ans v\u00e9cue au Canada. Elle est morte en 1989. Quoiqu\u2019elle ait fuit la culture de sa terre natale, elle voulait tout de m\u00eame qu\u2019on prenne soin d\u2019elle apr\u00e8s sa mort dans le temple bouddhiste de Honganji.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ignore l\u2019endroit de sa derni\u00e8re demeure.<\/p>\n

Dans un entretien avec Maya Koizumi, Kiyoko parle ouvertement du commerce du sexe, de ses \u00e9poux, de ses copains, de ses contacts, et de ses pratiques ill\u00e9gales; elle parle \u00e9galement de sa pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les Chinois plut\u00f4t que les Japonais, de la perte de son mari, de son travail, de son argent, de sa fille\u2013 bref, elle d\u00e9fie toutes les notions de la f\u00e9minit\u00e9 japonaise.<\/p>\n

En tant que soci\u00e9t\u00e9, nous avons des attentes \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des femmes asiatiques. En tant que femme asiatique, je suis cens\u00e9e \u00eatre plusieurs choses \u00e0 la fois, mais je ne le suis pas. Je ne suis pas tranquille, petite, exotique, encore moins, soumise. Mais chaque jour je m\u2019efforce \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 ces attentes. Nager contre le courant, m\u00eame au vingt-et-uni\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, est un lourd fardeau. Notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9, obs\u00e9d\u00e9e par toute chose porno et la forme f\u00e9minine, aime d\u00e9valuer, ignorer et m\u00e9priser les travailleuses du sexe. En tant que femme, je suis aux prises avec les relations malsaines qu\u2019entretiennent les hommes avec les femmes et le sexe, et vice versa.<\/p>\n

Ce qui me fascine dans l\u2019histoire de Kiyoko, c\u2019est qu\u2019elle a bris\u00e9 TOUTES LES R\u00c8GLES et toutes les attentes de la culture et de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 envers son genre. C\u2019\u00e9tait une jeune femme japonaise vivant au d\u00e9but du vingti\u00e8me si\u00e8cle qui avait la franchise, le savoir-faire et la confiance n\u00e9cessaires pour se tailler une place dans le nouveau monde \u2013 un monde qu\u2019elle a cr\u00e9\u00e9 elle-m\u00eame \u2013\u00a0 <\/span>et ce, \u00e0 mille lieues de chez elle et de ses proches, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elle \u00e9tait dans son \u00e9l\u00e9ment. Kiyoko est devenue mon mentor post-mortem.<\/p>\n

J\u2019aimerais explorer la vie de Kiyoko Tanaka-Goto, non pas du point de vue st\u00e9r\u00e9otyp\u00e9 qu\u2019elle serait un pimp<\/i> en guise de femme-dragon (m\u00eame si, parfois, c\u2019est bien le cas), ni de celui selon lequel elle \u00e9tait une fille ob\u00e9issante (m\u00eame si, parfois, c\u2019est bien le cas), ou un sex-symbol<\/i> exotique (m\u00eame si, parfois, c\u2019est bien le cas), mais de celui selon lequel elle s\u2019av\u00e8re un membre pr\u00e9cieux de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 canadienne qui a d\u00fb lutter tout au long de sa vie contre toutes les attentes pour d\u00e9fendre son autonomie et pour \u00eatre reconnue. Au d\u00e9but, je pr\u00e9voyais \u00e9crire un solo th\u00e9\u00e2tral, mais j\u2019envisage raconter sa vie \u00e0 travers les femmes qui l\u2019entouraient et qui partageaient sa vie, \u00e0 savoir, ses employ\u00e9s, ses partenaires en affaires, sa m\u00e8re, sa fille \u2013 enfin, toutes les femmes qui peuplaient son monde.<\/p>\n
